Joseph Rinke Obituary, Death – Leavenworth Veteran and Forest Service Worker Remembered for Service, Family and the Outdoors

Joseph Rinke of Leavenworth, Washington, died on August 25, 2026. Born on April 15, 1949, Joseph was raised in the community and went on to build a life centered around military service, public service, family, craftsmanship and his love of the outdoors.

Joseph attended Leavenworth High School, where he distinguished himself as an athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He later continued his education at Wenatchee Valley College.

In 1969, Joseph entered the United States Army, serving with Company D of the 1st Cavalry Division. During his military career, he advanced to First Class Sergeant and Platoon Leader. His service earned him several military distinctions, including the Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal.

After completing his Army service, Joseph dedicated more than three decades to the United States Forest Service in Leavenworth. He initially advanced to the position of Fire Suppression Supervisor before returning to Wenatchee Valley College to study Automotive Technology.

His technical training led him to the Forest Service transportation department, where he became responsible for maintaining the agency’s vehicle fleet. His years of work reflected both his commitment to public service and his practical skills.

Away from work, Joseph found some of his greatest happiness in his family. He is survived by his son Matthew, daughter-in-law Teneille, and grandchildren Rylan and Logan; his son Shane Nelson, daughter-in-law Tiara, and grandchildren Aziah and Taliah of Kea’au, Hawaii; and his stepsons Stuart and Skylar Campbell, with whom he shared a close relationship.

He is also remembered by his sister Caroline Rinke; his brother Robert Rinke and sister-in-law Natalie Lew; his niece Rachel Rinke; and his nephew Joseph L. Rinke.

Joseph was known for his ability to work with his hands and took pride in building and restoring homes. Among his projects was a home he built for himself and another he later constructed for his parents in Leavenworth. His restoration work became another expression of his craftsmanship and dedication.

The outdoors was another important part of Joseph’s life. He was an avid runner for many years and remained active as he grew older. In his later years, he became a familiar presence during his long daily walks around Icicle and Ski Hill.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. Rinke Sr. and Nina Rinke.

His life brought together military service, decades of work with the Forest Service, athletic achievement, craftsmanship, outdoor pursuits and, above all, a deep connection to his family. He leaves behind memories that will remain with his loved ones and with the Leavenworth community he called home.
